Introduction

Supplement Mart is one the largest supplement and sports nutrition retailers in Australia, selling protein powders, pre-workouts, vitamins and other nutrition and general wellbeing products. From opening their first store in 2010, they are now the largest sports nutrition store with 30+ physical stores and an online eCommerce store.

Insight

Supplement Mart engaged Megantic to assist in a migration from Magento 1 to Shopify, an easier to use CMS platform, but one that comes with many risks in terms of Organic Search losses, especially after 4+ years of building up authority via the Magento structure. Megantic’s vast experience in migrations and post-migration damage recovery for failed Shopify migrations was one of the key selling points for partnering together.

Our Approach

After a temporary (and expected) downturn in Supplement Mart’s organic rankings post-migration in September 2020, Megantic’s careful pre-planned and extensive post-migration SEO actions over the following two years have completely turned the business around.

Main post-migration actions included:

Correct onsite setup of /collections/ with clean URLs & unique H1s to target each keyword cluster
Custom meta/page titles and meta descriptions, explaining each category with unique selling points to drive CTR
Optimising outdated on-page text from M1. Our strategy is “less is more”, user-centric content
Adding H2 and H3 tags where needed to expand on target keywords for more competitive collections
Adding internal links down into related product pages on collections, helping bots & users when visiting the website
Offsite backlinking for bot crawling but also referral traffic, across blogs, socials & image posting

Year on Year Results

In just over a year (May 2021 to September 2022), organic rankings have increased 7x fold. Traffic, sales and revenue are continuing on a +50-100% increase Year-on-year from Organic Search alone, and the business is thriving Australia-wide.

Supplement Mart has been Megantic’s most successful Shopify campaign in the agency’s history, which is a huge achievement having come off the back of a Magento 1 URL structure and code stack.
